On the 19th of May, 2016 the Macmillan Teacher Campus (MTC) team travelled to Siyabushwa in Mpumalanga, where it hosted the Mareleng Teacher Development Training Launch. This partnership with the University of Johannesburg is funded by USAID and ELMA and the objective is to flip Mareleng Primary School into a Teaching school much like the Funda UJabule School in Soweto, the first one of its kind in South Africa – Mareleng Teaching School will be the second in our country.

The Mareleng Teaching school is a partnership between the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Macmillan Teacher Campus and serves as training site for teacher education students at the university where the students in the Foundation Phase Education degree programme participate in classroom activities in the school, learning about the practice of teaching. They spend time in the school as classroom observers and as assistants. The staff of the school will become assistant teacher educators of the UJ students and will work closely with the UJ lecturers. Macmillan Teacher Campus’s  aim is to train and develop the educators of Mareleng Teaching school and help the University bridge the ‘theory-practice divide’. Who better than MTC, with their practical, fun, activity-based workshops to assist with this!
